Hanshan's Dharma name is Chengyin. In the first year of Wanli, when he visited Wutai Mountain, he saw the beautiful scenery of Hanshan Mountain in Beitai, so he named himself Hanshan Mountain.
When Zhu Yijun arrived accompanied by the empress dowagers of the two palaces and the female eunuchs, Hanshan had been waiting outside the Nuan Pavilion of the Yangxin Hall for a long time. After everyone was seated, the eunuchs ushered them into the main hall.
Hanshan is a Zen monk. According to Taizu's regulations, he can only wear dark brown monk clothes and green sash and jade cassocks. When he entered, Zhu Yijun looked up and saw that he was in his thirties, with silkworm eyebrows, red and phoenix eyes, a calm demeanor, and something like an eminent monk.
Zhu Yijun turned to look at Queen Mother Li again, and saw that she was smiling, clasping her hands together, and nodding slightly to Hanshan. He thought to himself: "It seems that she believes deeply."
Han Shan didn't dare to look around, so he knelt down on the ground as he entered the door, like a Buddha, with his palms up and his head bowed.
According to the tenets of Buddhism, this monk is an outsider. Even if he meets the emperor, he just puts his hands together and bows his head in salute. But in the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Shaman Tongfaguo said to the emperor: "I am not worshiping the emperor, but worshiping the Buddha." At that time, the emperor was regarded as the Tathagata.
This solves the etiquette problem for Buddhist disciples when facing the emperor. Faguo said that monks kneeling to worship the emperor are not worshiping power but worshiping Buddha - but they are deceiving themselves and others. Faguo was the first monk in the history of Chinese Buddhism to advocate kowtowing to the emperor. After that, monks who were lucky enough to see the emperor would bend their knees in accordance with the principles advocated by Faguo.
When Zhu Yijun saw him prostrated, he waved his hand and said, "No need to be polite, I'll give you a seat."
Hanshan thanked him, stood up and bowed to the two palaces before taking his seat.
Zhu Yijun said with a smile: "You first held a religious ceremony in Wutai to pray for the emperor's heir, and then returned to Beijing all the way to preside over the ritual. Princess Rongchang, mother and son are both safe, thanks to the protector."
Han Shan hurriedly folded his hands and said: "The poor monks and others will never dare to take credit. The emperor is the living Buddha, and he has hundreds of gods to protect him; the queen and princess are golden branches and jade leaves for thousands of years, how can all evils invade the body? This is the emperor's own blessing, not The power of a poor monk."
The kind sage Empress Dowager Li smiled and said: "Master, there is no need to be too modest. According to what you said, the late emperor had two children before the emperor, but unfortunately they died - didn't the late emperor not have the blessing of a hundred gods? It can be seen that, or Master protects the Dharma well."
After Hanshan heard this, he was very worried about Queen Mother Li's brain circuit after she fell into religious fanaticism. He knew that Empress Dowager Li was asking for merit from him in front of the emperor, but what he just said was just polite words, but she defended him as serious words. I was caught off guard and couldn't pick up the topic.
But it's not okay not to answer the call. Firstly, it's disrespectful. Secondly, if the emperor takes it seriously, if any prince or princess dies in the future, will he still be alive?
Although Queen Mother Rensheng believed in Buddhism, she was not superstitious. Hearing what the always shrewd Empress Dowager Li said was out of tune, she secretly smiled in her heart and smiled a little on her face.
When Hanshan raised his eyes slightly, he saw the emperor looking at him with a smile on his face and a slight blush on his face. Then a sudden thought came to my mind, and I wanted to give Yuan the proposition.
Because Zhu Yijun didn't speak, Empress Dowager Li was confused, and Empress Dowager Chen just smiled, the atmosphere in the Yangxin Hall was slightly awkward.
Hanshan was a very perceptive person. After being slightly embarrassed, he clasped his hands and said honestly: "What the Queen Mother said is that the poor monk got the appearance. The so-called blessings come from practice. When the late emperor's true spirit was ignorant, he had a shortage of seven treasures. Although I later sought the true truth, I was unable to obtain the true result due to the lack of luck.”
While he was talking, he peeked at the emperor again, and Hanshan's heart skipped a beat when he saw his serious face. He quickly clasped his hands and said a verse: "The future is unthinkable, and the past is nothing." He lowered his eyes slightly, took out the solemn treasure elephant, and pulled up the force.
Seeing his boldness, Zhu Yijun raised his eyebrows and became somewhat interested in Hanshan. So I comforted him first and said, "You don't have to be restrained. Today I am serving the Queen Mother. I originally wanted to listen to some Buddhist teachings."
Empress Dowager Li interjected again: "Your Majesty, you don't know how deep this monk's practice is! Zibai told me that Han Shan had already arrived when he was twenty-eight years old. This, when he arrived -" but he couldn't explain it in professional terms.
Hanshan hurriedly took over the topic and said: "To return to the Queen Mother, the Avatamsaka Sutra says it is "Sea Seal Luminous Samadhi". It is like a person on the sea, the sea and the sky are one, his thoughts are empty, and he is in a cool and bright world."
Zhu Yijun nodded slightly. Han Shan then said to Queen Mother Li: "Besides, I know that even though I have experienced this state during my practice, I cannot be blinded by others but it is there. But it is nothing special if my heart is empty and has no thoughts. You must not be greedy and attached to it. Give up the basics and pursue the weak.”
Empress Dowager Li happily praised and nodded to accept the instruction. Queen Mother Chen's eyes were dull, and for the first time she felt that her cultural level was much worse than Queen Mother Li's. Zhu Yijun originally had no interest in this Buddhist scripture, but he was overwhelmed by Hanshan's demeanor and became curious.
When Han Shan saw Zhu Yijun's expression, his heart was as excited as a drum, but his face didn't show it at all. After saying this, he once again looked solemn and maintained his dignity.
Zhu Yijun pondered for a moment and then said: "I heard from my mother that it is rare for you to pierce blood and copy scriptures in order to repay your parents' kindness."
Han Shan hurriedly bowed and clasped his hands and said: "Because the Queen Mother was ill, the Emperor used blood to copy the scriptures at the young age of Chong. All the people in the world shed tears for the Emperor's filial piety. The poor monk only admires the Emperor's filial piety just in case, but he should not do it. The Emperor’s praise.”
Zhu Yijun hummed, then asked the monk with a smile: "Then do you think that apart from repaying the deep kindness of your parents, do you think that monks have any other favors to repay?"
Hanshan listened, thought for a moment, bowed and echoed: "Return to the emperor's words. The poor monk thought that he still had to repay the blessings of the emperor and his country and the country." As soon as Zhu Yijun heard his words, he knew that this was a person. There is a way.
Without comment, he continued to ask: "Is there any more?"
Han Shan said: "There is also the kindness of the master's preaching and the kindness of all living beings to protect us. These are the kindness that people outside the country should keep in mind day and night and remember to report them at all times."
"Then how to repay?"
"Because of the suffering of all sentient beings in the three realms, to have bodhicitta and perform compassionate deeds for the Bodhisattva is to repay the great kindness of the emperor, parents, teachers and all sentient beings."
"Can meditation, meditation, and various other practices be called acts of compassion and bodhisattva practices?"
Although Han Shan saw that the emperor was asking more and more questions, he was used to playing tricks. Apart from having to be careful when speaking because of his status as the emperor, this kind of question did not trouble him at all: "If you go back to the emperor, practice all kinds of things." , It’s just a job of sharpening the knife and chopping firewood.”
I thought this was a perfect answer. According to Zen practice, this sentence is enough to make the opponent think for a long time. Unexpectedly, the emperor did not talk about martial ethics, so he actually started to get to the bottom of it: "Does Master Hanshan think that doing compassionate things and serving as a Bodhisattva is the foundation, and practicing enlightenment is the end?"
Hanshan initially thought that the emperor was just asking casually, but now he saw that the emperor was having an in-depth debate on Buddhism with him, and he couldn't help but ignite his fighting spirit.
In this debate, you cannot follow your opponent's thinking. Hanshan clasped his hands together and first announced the Buddha's name: "Amitabha! The emperor pointed at the wisdom root of the heart and asked about the root cause." Well, let's pat it first, so as not to irritate the brain due to the debate.
"Knowing kindness and repaying kindness is essentially cultivation. When bodhichitta arises, not only doing things, walking, sitting, lying down, but also sleeping are all cultivation. How can there be any difference between the basic and the basic?"
Seeing the emperor listening and thinking quietly, he then said: "Your Majesty, unless a person has attained the true state of enlightenment, he will be the same in this world. Even if there are causes and effects in the past life and cannot be seen, he is still the same body. No matter whether living beings are outside or in this world, they are still the same body. However, none of the four kinds of kindness can be fully repaid. You can only devote yourself to practice to repay kindness, so that you will have no regrets when you die, and only when you have no regrets can you have ultimate happiness. - This is a simple insight of a poor monk. "
Seeing that the emperor's face was smiling more and more, Han Shan quickly recalled his answer and added: "If people outside the country care about what they can achieve, this is persistence; if they only care about their realm when they are brave and diligent, That’s even evil.”
