No matter how powerful Moggallana was, he could not give his mother a full meal.
Therefore, the angry Moggallana approached Sakyamuni and asked him why his mother fell into the realm of evil ghosts and would never be reincarnated even though he had been doing good deeds all his life and paying attention to cause and effect.
If it hadn't been for this whim, I might never have known that my mother had fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts, and would have endured the pain of hunger forever.
Unexpectedly, the Buddha showed compassion and compassion and gave an explanation that Moggallana could not accept at all.
【Moggallana! Your mother suffered this retribution because she slandered the Buddha and the Sangha, did not believe in the dharma of cause and effect, was greedy, angry and evil, and played tricks on all living beings when she was still alive. 】
[Because of the deep love between mother and child, your magical powers are covered by family affection, so you don’t know your mother’s sins! 】
Not to mention that Moggallana could not accept this explanation, I am afraid that it is impossible for any normal person to accept this explanation.
Therefore, Moggallana then stole the gold and tin Zen staff of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, broke into the eighteenth level of hell, and forcibly rescued his mother.
The eight million evil ghosts originally imprisoned in the eighteenth level of hell also took the opportunity to escape from the underworld and came to the human world.
According to myths and legends, the time when the eight million evil ghosts fled to the world was the period of war and chaos in the late Tang Dynasty.
Therefore, in most versions of the legend, there is a saying that these eight million evil ghosts transformed into cruel officials, Tang soldiers, and even demons, causing trouble to the Tang Dynasty and eventually destroying it.
At this point in the story, it can be roughly divided into several versions.
First, Moggallana was a disciple of Sakyamuni, and he held the gold and tin Zen staff of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. In addition, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva also has a legend of saving his mother.
Therefore, there are rumors that Moggallana is actually Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.
After releasing the eight million evil ghosts, knowing that he was deeply sinful, He made the oath "until hell is empty, and I will never become a Buddha" in order to atone for the sins of himself and his mother.
At the same time, he also sent his divine beast Di Heng to the human world to kill and subdue the eight million evil ghosts who escaped from hell on his behalf.
Secondly, the personas of Moggallana and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva are not integrated into one.
After committing a heinous crime, even though Moggallana was the most powerful in supernatural powers, he knew that he could not escape his guilt, so after appeasing his mother, he personally went down to earth to subdue the eight million evil ghosts.
The third one is the one that Pei Wende currently feels is most consistent with the reality.
That is, after Moggallana released the eight million evil spirits, not only failed to save his mother, but he was also punished by Sakyamuni and was reincarnated as the ugly Huang Chao.
