Birch struggled to walk and climbed up the mountain path.
This road was not dug out by hard-working hands, nor dug out by digging claws, but was sheared by the wind and rain of countless generations.
We had been walking all day since we landed, and now it was the beginning of night, and we slowly began to stand up.
Even though we're getting closer to the sky, closer to where the sun hangs most of the time, it's getting colder. There is little protection from the wind.
The rocky terrain shook, and the stones Birch stepped on came loose.
-Ahead of us is a cave.
"Let's just spend the night here," Birch said, rubbing his head. "I don't feel good."
ah.
Birch, there are many reasons why you may be uncomfortable.
I'm guessing your body wasn't happy with the raw crab meat, wasn't happy with the strain on your torn muscles, wasn't happy with the intense hunger in your belly.
-But I think this is unwise.
Birch looked around the cave.
It was a very shallow thing, nothing more than a sunken hole in the rock of the mountain. But it can protect against wind and rain.
She sat down and let out a long breath, her head falling back against the rock as she fell. My friend was so exhausted that even I couldn't do anything about it.
This is most unfortunate.
I looked around from where we were sitting and had an overview of the land behind us.
The sky is bright tonight, but not because of the moon, which has gone into hiding. It's because of this complicated starry sky that covers the whole world heavily.
It seems I have no choice.

I can't speak to the mycelium of the mushrooms from here, because there is almost no loose soil in the mountains. But I know the monsters are on their way.
I can only hope that the spiders will dissuade the first group and slow them down. At least until Burch takes a break.
My roots snaked down her body, snaking like vipers to the rocks.
It takes a long time, but I have to start digging holes in the rocks. Maybe I can give us more time?
Birch had been sleeping for several hours, her body recovering as best it could from severe malnutrition and overexertion.
For her sake I ate a few spiders that had begun to crawl up the mountain with my roots, and I ate them as blood. I then directed this paste into her body through my thicker roots. While she rested, I stuffed the spider pulp into her stomach.
Sleep well, Birch. heal. have eaten. Grow strong and fat.
I need you to do this.
I can't get to heaven without you.
The rest of my roots go deep into the loose rocks of the mountain.
Midnight has passed. This is precious time that we will never recover.
Birch was still sleeping in a state from which I could not wake her.
Below us, beneath the starry sky that covers the entire world, another starry sky has emerged.
The ground is covered with stars, just like the sky.
——Firelight.
Torch.
The goblin hordes are moving down the world below us, heading in our direction.
I suspect they are near the area where the cows are. For its sake, I hope it's no longer there, in some distant pasture.
However, we seem to be in luck. The swarm seemed to be slowing down. It looked like they were resting for the night as well.
Luck favored us today.
But the first of them, the Scouts and Pathfinders, they'll be coming soon.
-I intend to.
Something was sniffing, humming, lurching in the darkness around us.
My roots spread gently across countless interconnected spider webs, and I feel a jolt when something steps into one of them.
Thousands of spider legs swooped down on the harasser, and even though it was much larger than the flies or moths they usually caught, many began to eat the little goblin like any other insect.

No screaming.
I guess the goblin just had too many spiders in his mouth.
The spiders retreat into the darkness and return to their webs.
Then, another one came.
This dance went on for a while, with goblin scouts sniffing out our traces, but always encountering webs or traps spun by hungry spiders who couldn't find insects so high up.

Birch continued to sleep.
She muttered something about bees.
I do not quite understand.
But I love watching her cower like a frightened rabbit during her breaks. It is very cute.
I would like to know.
Maybe I'm too stressed?
My roots wrapped around its neck and it kicked in the dirt, grabbing at my roots.
I had become so obsessed with the idea of paradise, with the idea of adventure, that maybe I was missing the whole point?
—The goblin choked and crackled as life left its container.
After all, finding paradise wasn't my idea. This belongs to my best friend Birch. I just adopted it, just like I adopted her.
And here I was, forcing her hands and legs to move towards that spot, as if I had thought of it.
Heaven is not going anywhere.

What a fool I am.
I was so entranced by the destination that I lost sight of the journey. This trip has brought me a lot.
It dawned on me that I had overemphasized the importance of the reward at the end of the journey. But I ignored the rewards I had received.
These are far more important than heaven.
Another goblin walked toward us along the cliff.

I raised my head and looked at the moon.
My eyes were always fixed on the sun.
-But maybe the moon is worth seeing too?
Everyone knows I'm a judgmental person. Maybe it's my own stupidity?
The fact that I realized this and did nothing to correct it shows a weakness on my part, which is most unsuitable for Himawari.

I have to try to do better.
My best friend, Birch, is still counting on me.
Isn't that why I came?
My face was featureless, my eyes were gone, and I looked up at the moon.
The moon is the most difficult thing to understand.
The sun comes out every day, but it always appears in the same form.
--bright. full.
But the moon is different.
Some nights the moon appears only partially, some nights it is full, and some nights it does not appear at all. It changes itself every day, but it continues its journey even as it undergoes changes every night.
Maybe we can learn from this?
Maybe I should be more like the moon?
--lasting. But be willing to experience change. bright. But to be a light in dark places, so that others may follow me, as I follow the sun.
Um.
Several hundred feet of mountain stretched upward.
The spider told me a lot.
Birch, however, was still resting, having fallen into a deep sleep. Her head was filled with dreams and her belly was stuffed with processed spider meat.
Get well, Burch.
Tonight, I will be a moonflower.
-I hope you don't find this change in me unpleasant.
I turned my head and looked into the darkness below, at the hundreds of silhouettes and eyes that were slowly becoming clearer in the darkness.

The first advancing goblin legions were coming towards us, they had sniffed us out.
Something growled in the darkness, peering in our direction.

The rock crackled in two. As far as I could see in the warm moonlight, there was a crack cutting through the mountain.
The face of the mountain cracked and slid away, carrying with it a hundred and then a few monsters, who tumbled crookedly and disappeared screaming into the darkness.
They died horribly.

Birch stretched himself out and yawned like a funny cat. I find it most enjoyable to watch from my perilous vantage point.
I could feel her back springing and her bones crunching as she moved.
The sun shone down on both of us. A new day has arrived.
She blinked and rubbed her face, continuing to stretch.
Judging from her movements, her plump belly and strong rest seem to have a magical effect on her composition.
"Good morning," Birch said, looking at me sleepily.
Good morning, Burch.
I raised my head and focused my attention back on the sunlight.
-Then I turned back to look at her.
The sun will come out tomorrow. But all I have now is Birch. My time with her was much harder than my time with the sun.
Birch screamed in horror, fell to his knees in terror, and grabbed me. I sit sideways on the edge of a cliff, definitely not here last night. mysterious.
Ha ha.
We almost died.
It's interesting.
