Chapter 25: The savanna is dyed red with blood

Birch flinched as the magical light illuminated by the moonlight left her hands and enveloped her blood-stained feet.

My friend winced and I watched with curiosity as her body regenerated her lost toenails. Then, after a while, the nails will grow back too. My roots, through her flanks, felt the strangest changes inside her body as it healed and regenerated at a most unnatural rate.

-What a strange thing, magic.

She sat there for a while, then finally opened her eyes again.

Hello, Birch.

I miss you.

Are you ready to continue our adventure?

I am. I feel like now is the time for us to do that.

Birch wiped his face clean, then rolled over and collapsed on top of me.

-She fell asleep.

The wind surrounded us as we sat high up.

very good.

I think it's only fair that I give you a break.

But we leave tomorrow, right?

I am very eager to see more of the world.

Letting my friend sleep, I covered her limbs with my roots to keep her body warm.

Since she was resting, I decided to lure some spiders into feeding her.

They weren't Burch's favorite, but she needed the energy. She hasn't eaten in days. In the worst case scenario, I would help her eat, forcing the nutrients into her intestines.

-An interesting idea.

Maybe the best of both worlds?

I listened to the commotion of the soil, and ten thousand feet jumped towards our hill.

As we walked, Birch held his belly and burped. My rude friend put his hand over his mouth and flinched at the thought.

-She doesn't know about spiders. I don't think I'll tell her.

"That scorpion must have screwed me up," Birch said, blinking a few times as he walked. We walked silently, step by step towards heaven. She looked back. "Thank you for always saving me," she said.

Of course, Burch.

After all, isn’t that what friendship is all about?

My friend's leg seems much more stable now after a long break. It's amazing how a few simple things can energize a person.

Sleep, deep.

Food, nutrition.

Water, pure.

Sunshine, bright.

These are the only things the body needs to sustain its life.

As for the soul, well…

-We both walked west, toward the place where the sun sets, where there are all the good, warm and valuable things.

What the spirit desires is equally simple.

The ugly goblin stood unsteadily, trying to maintain its balance while also struggling to rub away my friend's magical burns.

Two more men walked past us, and Birch fell to the ground with his fingers in the dirt.

A strange pulse of energy radiated from us, and now that I had time to think about it, I realized it was the same magic as Birch's own. It hit the goblins and they staggered. The man Birch had just injured fell dead.

Another one fell, knocked off his feet, and Birch took his chance. She lowered her head, locked her arms, and rushed to the last person standing. In a strange moment of renewed clarity, I saw that her attack was similar to that of the thorn deer that had pursued us so many weeks before.

I realized that my friends were always learning and not just learning from me. Also from the world we have experienced.

The monster flailed, trying to dig out of her new, thicker bark.

She raised her hands to its snarling face, just as she had done with the big male in the city.

Gliding through the poisonous mist, my friend held a knife in her hand and stabbed the last goblin in the belly, just as she had learned from the scorpion.

Struggle for survival. Catching people, biting people, gnashing teeth, I think this is the most wonderful thing.

Birch removed her pack and placed me on the dying goblin's chest, allowing me to nourish myself with what life was left of it.

All melee and natural damage is increased by 33% against targets larger than you.

Animals look and behave differently, and so do people. However, because druids are able to observe these creatures from an external, objective perspective, they are able to master certain behaviors and develop an inner connection to the magic of their natural environment, as well as the ability to use these magics themselves.

My friend, an apex predator on the savannah, screamed a few times as she crushed a dead monster's skull under her feet, as she had learned from freed captives in the city.

While I didn't mind the noise, nor her needless aggression on such a peaceful, happy day, I decided it was best to let her live her life as she saw fit.

-After all, I am a sunflower.

Birch is Birch.

Those are two different things, so, of course, we have two different mindsets.

However, maybe that's the problem? After all, that's how symbiotic relationships work. Two very different entities come together and benefit from their exchange of resources, each able to gather resources only through the use of their unique personalities.

A birch and a sunflower will go further than two birches or two sunflowers, and further than a sunflower or a birch.

Maybe this is a lesson I learned myself?

The rolling prairie, after weeks of trekking, finally came to an end.

What lies before us is something new and amazing.

--sand.

I never knew there was so much sand in one place.

It stretched, and stretched, as far as the eye could see, and I imagined it would stretch even further, just beyond the distant horizon.

I tremble.

Very magical.

charming.

What else can this world give me?

What other secrets and spectacular scenes await you?

The huge sandy beach lay before us, and I couldn't help but think that a place so dry, so arid, that a thousand birds' nests, where the sun had long since set, were not far from here.

-After all, why else would it be so hot and dry?

Heaven is closer than ever.

It must be.

Birch walked into the huge sandy beach. Her bare feet slipped and sank under the soft sand.

We continue westward, heading toward heaven.

We're close.
