Chapter 24: We sit and ponder the many mysteries of life

Since that day with the big fish, we have walked for many, many days.

Then we walked for many days.

Today, we no longer walk.

-A weirdo.

We sat quietly, in a corner, on a high mountain, building a nest on some high rocks. There, high above the world, higher than I think any sunflower would ever be, we rested.

Birch sat cross-legged. I sat not far behind her, stretching my roots into the rocky deposits of the mountain.

This is not ideal.

But I'd rather stay in the backpack because I've been there for a long time.

We sat quietly together, admiring the scenery and enjoying being so close to the sun.

I never knew a man could rise so high in the world.

This is higher than the last time we climbed the tree.

-It's very high.

I don't know what made my friend suddenly silent. He has been traveling and hunting these days, as if he was possessed.

From that day in the city, Birch thought only of escape, of the West, of the dream of paradise that haunted both of us.

But I'm not entirely unappreciative of her change of attitude. Life is indeed an adventure and very exciting. However, maybe it was too exciting. It's nice to sit down and relax for a while. For sunflowers, it's a more natural thing to do. Resting and sunbathing are much more natural than traveling.

One can defy nature for a while, but doing so will eventually catch up with you.

My leaves, stretched out, my head, held high and proud, stretched as far as they could to absorb more of the sun's calm radiance. My roots dig holes and greedily drink the rainwater from the ground.

ah.

Refreshing.

A gentle breeze blew across the empty wilderness. From our high mountains, from our high rocks, we see nothing but God.

It's just empty.

But it's not empty.

There are trees there. There are bushes. There were birds, herbivores and reptiles, creepy stuff. There is grass and stones here. There are clouds of various shapes in the sky, and there are various rhythmic movements in the wind.

-It's too unbearable.

There is so much to see in the world.

All trees vary in size, shape, and degree of distortion. All animals are different in their makeup, behavior and patterns. All clouds, winds and air have a sense of life, distinct from the anomaly of their existence.

Ha ha.

I guess I'm quite talkative today.

Maybe I'm just excited to take a break?

I'm a sunflower who needs a good day's rest.

It's a new day.

I've rested.

I thought Birch was a strange guy.

Her hair grows very long.

Maybe it was always long, but I never really noticed because of how messy, knotted, and dirty it was.

She seemed to have pulled out some twigs and splinters, and now, by some miracle of nature, it was loosened and fluttering in the wind on the mountaintops, as charming as the churning of leaves in the great forests of the world.

Fascinating.

I turned to the sky to absorb more sunlight.

Birch seemed to find an unusual peace here, high on the mountain I don't know why, but I didn't mind. My friend sat cross-legged on the rock, just like the day before, staring out at the world.

I'm not sure what she was looking at, or searching for on her hawk's perch, but it must have been pretty exciting.

The rain has come and a new day has come.

Birch was still sitting on the rock.

Is this our most exciting adventure yet?

I think so.

Why is she sitting on the rock?

What is she looking at?

What is she thinking?

I never knew Birch could sit still for so long.

- So charming.

The sun has left us and warm summer drops are falling from the gray sky.

ah.

I leaned back and found a hiding place on a ledge.

However, Birch continued to sit on her rock, mesmerized by the world, undisturbed by the rain.

Are we going to live here now?

I looked around.

I guess this is better than the patch of grass she found me on. The scenery there is much better.

If she were with me, once the rain stopped and the sun came out, things wouldn't be so bad.

I'm worried about Birch's health.

This is the most unusual behavior of Sunflower.

My roots entered her body and I slowly crawled up the rock towards her. She sat where she had been for days.

I haven't seen her eat or drink for a while. This is the most unhealthy.

So, I’m going to share my sugar and rain with you, Burch.

-I hope you can reveal your secret to me. The secrets you hold and witness. You are attracted by its elegance, it must be magnificent.

My friend sat quietly as I penetrated her soft flesh, just beneath her hard toenails.

I'm tired of this place.

How unusual.

I stared at the world around me, a majestic spectacle filled with splendor and wonder, both wondrous and terrifying.

-I'm sitting here, on a high rock.

Maybe I'm too greedy? Have I never cherished such a scenery in my life and been grateful for the many blessings life has given me?

But now, I find myself wanting more. I've seen too much. I saw, felt, and experienced so many strange and unique things, and I crave more of them. I crave these feelings like my body craves sunlight, like my heart craves sugar and water. I now see that there is no difference between my needs for tangible and intangible things.

But Burch still refused to move. She was still sitting on her big rock, still not sharing her secret with me.

My roots are filled with water, sucking deeply into the rain-fed soil.

A pulse shot out through the ground around me, shaking many of the rocks and stones on the mountaintop, creating a powerful tremor that felt stronger than before.

The large stone on which Birch sat swayed.

My friend slithered down like a snake and climbed backwards down the tree.

-This is the most ungraceful.

She plopped down on the ground next to me, motionless.

But something else could.

Behind her new bark crawled a lump.

As my roots threaded through her body and slid over her body, I saw what had happened to my friend.

-A scorpion emerged from her layer and fled quickly.

Wow.

What a beautiful creature.

I looked back at my friend. Foam and saliva flowed from her mouth, pressing against the stone.

It seems I was wrong. What a fool I am.

I mistakenly thought my friend was resting and pondering the mysteries of life.

But she appears to have been stung by a scorpion and has been battling its possession and venom for days. She's resistant to the toxin, which is a good thing.

-to some extent.

Ha ha.

Oh, Burch.

You are such a fool.

I really admire you.

I used my roots to push her dirt-filled backpack under her head, allowing her to rest there, protected from the scorpion and its re-injection of venom.

I would like to know.

What does it feel like to be stung by a scorpion?

I guess I'm actually a little jealous now. Once again, Birch experienced something that I may never know about.

No.

No. It's wrong for me to be jealous. I should be happy for my friend.

I'm happy for my friend.

I turned to look at Birch's face, which showed an unreadable and suspiciously lucid expression.

I'm glad you're living life to the fullest, Birch.

I wanted to wiggle my roots under her toenails to show my contentment and understanding. But it seems I'm not realizing something key.

-I just used my ability to fill my roots with water, and I also filled the roots under her toenails with water.

They were all deceived.

Although she wasn't awake, she seemed to be crying.

What a life she lived.

Imagine being able to feel things even while sleeping.

——Incredible.

I want to be more like my best friend Birch.
