Chapter 18: I made a big decision today

There is beauty in the simplicity of life.

The green grass swayed in the gentle wind, bringing with it a soothing dry heat. It hints at a mellow summer coming to the world.

Birch and I escaped the monster's clutches, and for several days we walked in blissful silence.

I looked up at the sun as my friend walked, her "hands", I now knew, clutching the "straps" of her backpack.

She is hungry.

My friend could only survive on the sugar I provided her, and on the hope that the sun brought us.

However, there is beauty in this simplicity. hunger.

Imagine being alive and still feeling hungry. It's so simple, yet so majestic.

hand. Shoulder straps. hunger. How many other unique concepts like this are there in the world?

One word can describe everything, whether it's feelings or things in the physical world, or even things in the spiritual world.

How many words are there in total?

There are certainly many.

this is the best.

I never knew there were so many words. I want to learn more words. I believe Birch knew a lot of words.

-I wonder, will she teach me?

That's great.

If only I had a way to ask you.

oh.

I guess it doesn't matter. Before, I knew very few words and lived a good life. Now, I have learned a lot of words and my life is still good.

No matter how many words I learn, life is good.

Birch, ever since "reaching level five," has been using what little energy she has to consider a series of options, all of which I don't quite understand.

She read her book, turning over the many pages, like an excited bird digging in the bushes in search of sturdy material for a nest.

I think Birch is also looking for sturdy material to build his nest. But neither the materials she seeks nor the lair she hopes to build belong to the physical world.

-I am a metaphorical sunflower.

Ha ha.

Birch sighed and closed his book to go to bed, and we stared at each other for a moment.

Hello.

I think your face is pretty.

"I thought if I took a class, I could really help us," she said, breaking our usual silence. She put her hands behind her head and lay down on the grass next to my stem. Her eyes flicked across my face to the starry sky, and I, the most curious of all, turned and stared.

-I want to know, are we looking at the same star now?

"You know what?" she asked, and I noticed she raised one of her bony arms, pointing toward the sky. But I couldn't quite figure out why. She was just lying on the grass, raising her arm up, her hand outstretched, As if it were a stem, as if she wanted to catch a star.

ah.

I see.

Yes.

Looking back to the sky, I realized I wished I had hands like hers.

-Then, maybe the two of us, maybe together we can catch the sun from the darkness.

However, this is a stupid idea.

Your arms are too short, Birch. But I like your spirit. Let us face the sun together tomorrow.

I am a sunflower.

-Even if I don't have hands.

The bird flew away in panic, its feathers scattered in the air.

We were high up and Birch climbed up a tree again.

Today she discovered a nest. There are eggs in the nest. She grabbed a bunch and carefully reached into her backpack, stuffing them inside and placing their fragile bodies one by one on my roots. I wrapped my roots around them and stroked them tenderly, protecting her treasure as she slowly walked down the tree to the ground. It seems that there will be something to eat today.

We reached Soil and Birch, although it was not night, made a fire.

She gently removed the eggs from my nest and placed them at the edge of the fire on several slowly heating stones.

We sit, wait, watch. I raised my head and looked back at the tree and saw a distressed little bird sitting there, its treasure having been plundered.

-I would like to say that I feel good. After all, the birds stole my precious seeds. So this seems fair.

However, I wasn't happy about the bird's suffering.

oh. this is life.

Birch buzzed again, humming as he poked the fire with a stick, his eyes flashing with precious light, looking at the eggs, like a pile of the brightest kindling.

That's an even deal for me.

Life is complicated.

"A druid, perhaps?" Birch asked. She handed the book to me and pointed to some scrawled writing inside.

I leaned forward, trying to figure out what it was that she was showing me. But I can't understand anything.

I looked up at the noon sun indifferently. I watch carefully to make sure we are still moving in the right direction.

We are here to travel.

"I mean, it really suits you, you know?" Birch asked, looking back at the book.

-I have no idea.

"I bet we could combine all sorts of magical spells," she suggested. "I can finally start helping you."

ah. So many words.

My head is buzzing.

How many words were just spoken? More than I have ever heard at one time.

How unusual. Where do I begin to understand her question, which I only vaguely understand?

She wants to expand her magic. I think it's in her nature.

-Hunters always want to shoot better. Predators crave to be on top.

Our hunt proved that we were stronger than the monster, just as we were stronger than her kind, just as we were stronger than the birds and rabbits. But we are not above the thorn deer. We are not above the water. There are many things, many predators and dangers far deadlier than us.

-Isn't it amazing?

How many things can hunt us? Kill us? What do we eat?

Wow.

Life is indeed exciting.

very good.

I turned my gaze back to Birch. His eyes were raised expectantly into my face.

I didn't know how to answer her, so I lowered my face and pressed it against the book, the open page.

When I pulled back, I saw she was smiling, and there was a little egg-yellow stain on the corner of her mouth.

Her face looked warm and she nodded to me, wasting water again.

-She's such a fool.

It won't rain for a few more days.

oh.

She's a fool, but she's my friend.

Wow.

You talk a lot.

My previous theory was correct.

-What a wonderful world.

How can one person keep up with so many different things?

To be honest, I prefer a slower pace of life.

While my friend was buzzing like a bee, I, being the wiser of the two of us, spread my petals and soaked up the sunlight.
