As we were walking, a suitor came over.
I raised my petals and covered my face as it came towards me. A bee.
The fat bee was buzzing and searching the ground for beautiful flowers. I was flattered. Thank you, little bee. But I'm not ready yet.
-Besides, you make my friend nervous.
My mushroom friend eyed the bee warily and quickened his pace.
However, this confused bee, not knowing why I was moving in such an unusual way, chased me.
This upset my mushroom friends.
I don't know why we are moving either, honey. But it is what it is. I find it's better not to worry about it. After all, the weather is so nice today.
The bees were unmoved by my explanation and continued to chase us, unmoved by the protests of my mushroom friend. She gave a startled chirp and ran away again.
Traveling so much seems stressful.
I wonder if I can teach her how to relax properly next time we stop. She just needs to bury her roots in the soil and stand next to me so we can watch the sun together.
All this stuff that isn't buried is very unhealthy. She certainly looks that way, and I'm sure other sunflowers would think of me that way if they could see me.
But that's okay.
I've seen the world. I witnessed incredible wealth. There are many trees. There is a very large stone. I was taken to the water. Now, a bee is in love with me.
-unrequited love.
What a life I lead.
I am a blessed sunflower.
Heartbroken, my suitor had no choice but to give up the chase because we were too far off her route.
But that's okay. Such things can wait until I grow up.
They could wait until my friend finally settled down. It's rude to let yourself be pollinated and then run away.
Bees deserve better.
I like bees.
They have the same fuzzy yellow color as the sun.

This happens often. The word "wood" does like to come up a lot.
I don't know what this means.
I'm still mad at the word "wood" because it blocked my sunlight a few days ago by the creek.
Maybe this is unfair to me?
My friend seems to enjoy it every time he sees it pop up. The look on her face was strange and I couldn't understand it.
-Why do parts of it move?
Her eyes opened and closed. Her soft nub was just beneath them, dimpling inward, moving in and out. Her mouth is moving. But she doesn't say anything, instead she just seems to distort and change these features according to circumstance and time.
How strange.
Mushrooms are very strange creatures.
If the word "wood" makes my friend happy, then I will be happy too. Even if I don't quite understand why.
The sun is beautiful today. I hope we get another break soon. I'd like a drink.

I don't understand what this means.
But my mushroom friend was very excited. I stared at her, wondering why she was looking at me and not the sun? Or was she just looking at the word "wood"?
I guess in a way it's interesting, like that big rock.
-That's interesting.
Maybe I'm really being unkind to the word "forest"? There's got to be something good in that, isn't there? If it makes a mushroom like her happy.
I shook the leaves and it felt good.
My friend dug my roots into the soil and gently buried them, and I'm grateful for that.
Darkness has come again.
I wonder; what will the sun look like tomorrow?
She sat next to me, and the two of us watched the ruby sun slowly disappear over the distant horizon. I'm sad to see it go, like it is every day.
As the world darkens, I turn to the east, looking forward to the sun rising again tomorrow.
My friend made a fire and lay down between me and the fire.
I noticed she was also facing east.
She is learning.
good.
We found a gray area.
My friend is unhappy, even though we have the fresh sun to keep us company. I don't understand her reasoning.
The gray areas are weird. It's unlike any landscape I've ever seen before. There is no grass. There were rocks there, but they looked oddly square and uniformly shaped. They pile together and then, from the looks of things, fall apart again.
Ashes were scattered across the dirt and small remaining logs.
Almost everything is covered in ash.
Ashes are good for the soil. Fire can be dangerous, but it can also be a great boon if it's in the right place at the right time. Ashes contain many nutrients and minerals, which fertilize the soil once the heat and flames are gone.
The fire seems to have died down here. But the ashes remain. their luminous intensity.
-This fire is not that old.
My mushroom friends don't like gray areas. I could tell because of her movements. She was nervous. Her manner and posture were unsuitable for this sunny day.
I found that I was indifferent to it, the gray areas.
A bird sang nearby, and I turned my head nervously, but saw nothing.
Corpses filled the streets. They looked like they had been chewed clean by fire and predators in the area.
We passed a small hole. Inside, I saw a dead thing. It looks like my ugly friend. It was deformed, with two stumps on top and two stumps on the bottom. It also has meat.
-But it has no head.
How unusual.
There are many more like her. I didn't realize this. Maybe she's not a mushroom at all? Maybe I'm wrong? That's not what mushrooms are like, and mushrooms don't have bones.
She couldn't be a mushroom.
What are you, friend?
I have no idea.
I am a sunflower.
We were hiding again.
Why do we hide?
I don't like it here. It was dark. It's very crowded. The sun cannot find me here. This is most unpleasant.
I was buried in the dirt, drinking the rich, moist soil of the secluded woods. I build nests in trees and they steal most of my sunlight. My friend was hiding in a hollow log next to me. She is very quiet. I'm quiet.
It is peaceful.
The non-bird is here. Are they chasing us from the forest? Or are they another group of non-birds?
I have no idea.
I am a sunflower.
They must be in that gray area. I guess they made it gray.
I watched them, these non-birds, as they washed through the woods. They are skinny, sniffing creatures with long, jagged, spiny claws on long, gray-green hands. One of them will eat meat. Judging from the shape of the tree stump head it is holding in its hands, it seems to be a similar species to my ugly friend.
My friend also has a stump like this.
Something that screams.
I turned my head. Looks like they found her.
How unfortunate.
I watched her kick and fight as the non-birds crowded around the log while a series of clawed hands pulled at her. They seemed to have her brown petals.
-Are they petals? Does she have petals?
I have no idea. I have never seen petals like this. But if she wasn't a flower, I don't think she could have petals.
How confusing.
I thought she was going to be unlucky because she was going to be eaten. A shame. I love being held.
I looked back to the sky to see if I could find the sun. But I can't. The tall, green trees stole most of the sunlight and blocked my view. Only one seems to be able to find me.
I'm not happy about this. I want more sunshine.
The silence was broken by constant screaming.
I'm not happy about this either.
Unpleasant.
I turned around and looked at the mess. They seemed to drag her out of the log, and she tried to fight them off, but there were many non-birds there and only one of her. Additionally, she was physically weak and could only be nourished by sleep, water, and sunlight.
Even I need minerals from the soil.
When she was caught, she fell to the ground, her claws digging into the dirt, trying to get away from the non-birds as they clawed at her bark, tearing at it.
Please keep quiet.

More screaming. I do not like it. This is the worst. Today is such a peaceful day, can we all sit quietly in the sunshine?
The non-birds shrieked, shrieked, howled like dying animals, fell to the ground, and scratched their faces.

Annoyingly, my friend was still screaming and looking at me and looking around at the non-birds getting up. They seemed angrier now than before. Her fingers dug into the earth like roots.
This is troublesome.

The many screams were silent now. I looked at the non-birds and watched their rough, bird-like eyes light up. It was like the sun was burning brightly in their faces.
What a pleasure.
They dropped to the ground dead, convulsing like little bugs.
I like bugs.
They enrich the soil. Bugs are my friends.
Maybe she is a bug?
I looked at my earthworm friend and she was squirming too, pulling her hands out of the dirt and squirming, trying to stand up on her shaky legs. She often hides underground. She squirmed. She must be a nuisance.
Something stirred to the side. A non-bird, still alive, lying on the ground, trying to get up.
My friend screamed, grabbed a rock and hit himself on the head.
Please keep quiet.
I'm trying to enjoy what little sunshine I can get.
She continued to scream and the rocks continued to move. It turned red.
What a beautiful thing. I had never seen red rocks before.
I watched her for a moment until her screams died down. But she continued to crush Non-Bird's skull with rocks. She and it are both red.
It doesn't matter, I face the sky. Maybe, if I'm lucky, more sunlight will shine through this little gap soon.
-hope so.
I am a sunflower.
Something continued to crackle beside me. But at least there was no more screaming.
What a pleasure. Sounds like water.
Blood is good for the soil.

Experiencing a fungus-like symbiotic relationship, your roots can now thrive and embed themselves in any blood-rich soil. You'll get valuable metals and nutrients that wouldn't be readily available otherwise.
Rich in potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen, the blood-soaked soil turns into blood meal when dried, making it a very effective fertilizer. Due to its nature, it is difficult to obtain under normal living conditions.
