(The setting of "Soul Seaker" in this game is based on SCP-158. If there are any similarities, it is not a coincidence)

Item Number: SCP-158

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-158 is to be kept in Operating Room 07, Biochemical Research Area 12. No staff are allowed to enter, even those who are eligible to use the operating room. Unless they submit an application to the director of Research Group █████ and receive approval. Personnel using this equipment must carefully read the entire recording instructions. During use, two armed guards must remain outside the door at all times. If an accident occurs, all power in the room must be cut off immediately, and guards must immediately check if there is anything unusual in the room. Improper use will be punished by the research team leader based on the specific circumstances.

Description: SCP-158 is a large robotic arm, similar to the type commonly used in automobile factories, although the end attachment is oddly shaped, resembling a sharp, three-fingered claw. It had been installed in an optimal position and hung upside down, its base attached to the ceiling of a room large enough to accommodate it. A series of cables extend from the base and are linked to a complex mobile console with a VDU (Visual Display Unit) and a full-digit keyboard. If operation goes smoothly, the device should be connected to a working power source. There is an actuator on the bottom of the controller with a container approximately 7.6 cm (approximately 3 inches) wide and 17.8 cm (approximately 7 inches) high.

The robotic arm, cables, and console were continuously damaged by fire, but the damage was as cosmetic as it was cosmetic and did not affect the performance of the device at all.

When activated, the device takes 20 minutes to start.

When the device is properly operated by a sentient creature, SCP-158 will remove an unknown substance from the creature and transfer it using the actuating device beneath the console. The most suitable container to hold the transferred object is a glass jar or beaker of appropriate size. After the action is completed, the creature operating the device will stop the higher functions of the brain, and only the brainstem will remain active. The target does not respond to external stimuli or perform any basic reflex activities.

The material being removed is in a gaseous state, and its appearance and properties vary. The amount of kinetic energy, electrical energy, thermal energy, and light energy possessed by this substance is uncertain. Its rate, output, and changes also vary, and are relatively low on average.

The device was discovered in late 2007 in a burning hospital in █████, █████, which appeared to have been out of service for an extended period of time (roughly estimated to be over five years). Also found was a badly damaged "Owner's Guide" explaining how to use the device. This presentation was transcribed and copied several times, and a copy is always kept at the containment facility. The introduction clearly indicates how to repair and use the device, but the chapter on who made and what it was used for is too damaged to read, so it took a lot of experimentation to figure it out. (See Experiment Record 158-AA for details)

Additional Notes: This device is also capable of reversing extraction, placing the original or a different extracted substance back on the target. When the operation is complete, the target will regain all perception and higher brain functions, with the difference in results depending on whether the substance placed back into the operation target is consistent with the original.

Experiment Log 158-AA

This experiment was documented by: Dr. Heinrich Dreisch, medical researcher assigned to SCP-158.

Time: ██-██-2008

Experiment-01:

The unit worked flawlessly. It looked like the damage it sustained was merely decorative. But even more interesting is the material extracted from Experimental Target 001A. Its color is dark brown, and its state of matter is very strange, somewhere between liquid and gas. It should be researched and analyzed within an hour. Several attempts have been made to examine any type of brain activity targeted by the experiments, with little progress so far. Of course, nothing is lost.

Experiment-02:

The material extracted this time was bright blue, and it looked more... active than the last one. I wonder if this has something to do with age...

Experiment-03:

The test results came in, but they were fruitless. They can't figure out anything. We can't even find any information on whether this substance exists. There is nothing except that it will continue to emit light and heat.

Once again, this time a different substance was extracted, with a different color and different energy released. This is really strange.

Experiment-06:

There was a minor incident involving my assistant, Lucy. I'm not sure how she did it, but she locked the substance extracted from Experimental Target-006B on her laptop. Oddly enough, it (the computer) had run out of power before. And now, it's running, even though its power plug and battery have been taken away. However, it operates a bit strangely and has minor glitches, but nothing major. This makes me curious.

Experiment-11:

This is the last one tonight. This specimen was again different from the rest, but I noticed a pattern in the specimen's appearance. After running a series of experiments tomorrow, I believe I can explain it in detail.

None of the experimental subjects whose samples were taken have recovered from the vegetative state. Their bodies were not harmed at all. Not at all. I have ruled out all possible medical abnormalities. But nothing comes of it: they just sit there paralyzed, the lights are on, but no one is home (a metaphor for the strange condition of the experimental subjects). But even so, I still asked the guards to watch them, and Lucy's laptop was also kept, just in case. When it comes to these strange things, it's best to be careful and safe.

Date: ██-██-2008

Experiment-24:

I was right, the samples did have a pattern. I am almost certain that the difference in energy emitted by those samples is related to the age and vitality of the subjects. As for the difference in color, I think it has something to do with the subject's temperament, but I'm not sure. I had to do another series of experiments and get the files on the subjects.

Lucy's laptop was still running, even though it hadn't been plugged into a proper power source for two days. There are no traces of any relevant substance, either externally or internally. This unconventional phenomenon is also strange. If you let a word processing program sit idle, it will write its own file, but it will be all gibberish. Still, it’s worth trying to do some warranted research.

Experiment-27:

I try to put substances extracted from experimental subjects into various mechanical or electrical devices. The results are amazing. They all begin to operate independently without the need for an external source of power. And they will intermittently experience minor electrical failures. The mechanics will work more smoothly, if occasionally a little erratically.

Experimentation with matter will continue. I think after fifty or so times we'd stop.

Date: ██-██-2008

Experiment-45:

It has been shown that samples from implanted devices can be re-extracted using machines. When they are extracted, they are in the same state as before they were extracted. We might be able to harness them as an unlimited source of energy. But before that happens, we'd better find a way to fix their occasional "glitches."

I left the original sample on Lucy's laptop, which made her angry. Those glitches seem to be happening more frequently and weirder. Now it will automatically open the text program and type clear sentences. I saved those as documents for research purposes. The camera and microphone are turned on automatically, and even if you turn them off, they will remain on. After I did this for a while, the text program opened and I typed the sentence "Stop doing them, you bastard." I apply for a Turing test on this.

Date: ██-██-2008

Experiment-49:

The laptop has been tested, and it appears to have a personality similar to that of Subject-006B, despite the subject insisting that he has no memory of the time when the substance was implanted in the laptop. This confirmed my suspicions. Against all logic and scientific theory, SCP-158 is a device capable of extracting what most people call the soul. This creates countless experimental possibilities. This concludes this study.

P.S. Dr. Driesch has been promoted to leader of SCP-158 researchers. Further testing of SCP-158 and its products will continue.
