After the Battle of Ruying, Yuan Shu lost all his elite troops and fled to Pingyu in a hurry. After barely gathering more than 3,000 defeated troops, he reunited with Ji Ling's troops in Shangcai, and then he had nearly 10,000 troops. This amount of troops is enough to defend three or four cities, but for the entire Yuzhou, it is too few and almost undefended.
Liu Bei led his troops to rest for a while and continued to march southeast along Ru River. The road was smooth and unobstructed, and they continued to divide their troops to take over the surrounding cities. Within ten days, the headquarters was stationed in Dingying, Runan. Yuan Shu received news from the defeated soldiers who were fleeing over, and learned that the Han army was less than twenty miles away from him. He immediately lost his courage and fear of encountering the Han army again. At night, he only brought the imperial seal and his children with him. He abandoned the city's supplies and troops, and more than a hundred people fled to Jiujiang.
After leaving the city, Yuan Shu saw that the surrounding fields were vast, the sky was as dark as ink, and there was only half a waning moon between the vast sky and earth. But his group was small and helpless, like flies. A strong wind blew after the rain, and he felt no coolness, only fear in his heart. Only then did he remember that he had sent people to Ji Ling and Liao Zuo who were familiar with the city, saying that he would go back to Jiujiang to recruit troops first and asked them to tidy up before slowly withdrawing.
By the time Ji Ling got the news, Yuan Shu had already fled forty miles away. Hun Bu saw the heroic spirit of destroying the Han army before the war and only breaking through three passes. Ji Ling has such a master, how can he still have a temper? He originally planned that although the main force in Yuzhou was destroyed, there were still many bandits, each occupying the mountain. Therefore, we can first recruit these stragglers to resist the Han army step by step, so as to buy some time for Yuan Shu to build a new army in Yangzhou and still have the hope of separatist rule.
But now the rumors of the master's escape spread in the city, so that the soldiers had no intention of fighting. In this case, let alone defending the city, there was nothing Ji Ling could do even if he rebelled against his master and surrendered to the enemy. He had no choice but to contact his colleagues in the city and lead these ten thousand people to chase Yuan Shu, leaving Yuzhou completely to the Han army.
On the way, Ji Ling was filled with despair. In his opinion, this was a great opportunity for the Han army to take advantage of the situation to pursue Shouchun and destroy Yuan Shu. Unexpectedly, after the Han army occupied Runan, it stopped at the Huai River. Only a small number of troops were left to monitor the areas of Fubo and Yuanlu, and the army turned to the northeast to recover the four kingdoms of Pei, Liang, Chen, and Lu. At this point, the six counties of Yuzhou were completely recovered by the imperial court.
But does this give Yuan Shu a chance to reorganize? When Ji Ling was confused, he felt relieved. He first led the army to Xia Cai and sent an envoy to contact Yuan Shu who had returned to Shouchun. Unexpectedly, the envoy returned shocking news, saying that Sun Ce led Sun Jian's remaining 30,000 troops to break through Yinling and rescued Zhao Wen, the Yangzhou shepherd who was detained in the city. He then posted a notice and recruited troops on a large scale, claiming that he would go straight to Shouchun and capture Yuan Shu alive. .
In desperation, Yuan Shu had no choice but to ask Ji Ling to return to the city to defend the city, and sent an envoy to ask for help from Liang Gang in Lujiang. Although the Yuzhou army was destroyed. However, there are still many garrisons in various counties in Yangzhou, totaling about 60,000. If used properly, it may not be impossible to make a comeback.
However, Yuan Shu did not have this talent. Jiujiang County is located at the junction of the three states of Yan, Henan and Xu. It is the place where the Four Wars were fought, so Sun Ce had no intention of attacking Shouchun. His original intention was actually Lujiang. The purpose of this announcement is just to bluff and distract the tiger from the mountain. Once Liang Gang led his troops out of the county, Lujiang would be empty and ownerless, playing into Sun Ce's favour. The plan was not clever, but Yuan Shu was already unconscious and could not see the situation.
When Liang Gang arrived in a hurry with his army, Sun Ce happened to sneak into the Lujiang River from the south bank of Shaipi, passed him by, and entered Lu'an. In the name of Zhao Wen, he sent a message to all counties in Lujiang, announcing the conquest of Yuan Shu. After the memorial, Sun Ce stamped the seal of General Polu to show that he was the official of the imperial court. He had a righteous name, a strong military and elite soldiers, and Zhou Yu was a descendant of a wealthy family in Lujiang. With his help, Sun Ce's troops were able to surrender without any loss of blood, and all fourteen counties in Lujiang County surrendered.
During this period, Yuan Shu was trapped in Shouchun, unable to get out of the shadow of the Battle of Ruying. However, the situation around him continued to deteriorate. By the end of June, the entire Huainan had been turned upside down.
Not to mention that Jiujiang is in chaos, with bandits running rampant and refugees losing their homes. After Sun Ce from the west took over the throne, he did not stop. Instead, he began to recruit talents, and successively recruited Lu Su, Liu Ye, Zhang Zhao and other scholars. Then he appointed Zhou Yu as the chief of Anfeng, Zhu Zhi as the chief of Juchao, and Lu Su as the chief of Liu'an. He guarded the north of Lujiang with 20,000 troops. He himself led more than 10,000 soldiers to cross the river south and attack Danyang County directly. His ambition to conquer Jiangdong is clearly revealed.
But these are not as good as Xuzhou Baibo Army.
Before Yuan Shu's defeat, Yang Feng divided his troops into Xinzheng early and was always ready to withdraw. After Yuan Shu's defeat, Liu Bei had some intention of intercepting him and wanted to fight with him in Yuzhou. However, Yang Feng was not willing to fight. He crossed the Mishui River according to his previous plan and rushed eastward from the Chen and Pei countries. The defenses of the two countries are empty and it is difficult to stop Yang Feng in the slightest.
On the way back home, Dugu Qubei suggested: "Yuan Shu has collapsed and Yuzhou has no owner. If Liu Bei is forced to give up Xuzhou, it will be difficult to survive." Therefore, before the Han army takes over, it is also necessary to "take advantage of the situation." Expropriate the people, move goods to the east, and gain a little bit of land in the west to prepare for the war next year."
Yang Fengda thought so, so when he met the city along the road, he entered the city to ask for food, grass and luggage, and coerced the people to go eastward. Wuping, Ku, Qiao, Linsui, Xiang, and Zhi counties all suffered disasters. When he led his troops to enter Fuli, he held as many as 100,000 Guizhou soldiers hostage and captured more than 300 carts of baggage. Countless people died of starvation and illness on the way.
Such appalling evil deeds shocked the Central Plains. When Liu Bei saw Bai Bo leaving quickly, he originally planned to put it aside temporarily and take advantage of the victory to destroy Yuan Shu first. But after receiving the news, he had to turn his troops around and move the army to Suishui, in a battle attitude.
Since Yang Feng had obtained the wealth and supplies, he did not want to rush into a battle with Liu Bei, so he gave up the idea of occupying Pei State and slowly retreated to Xuzhou. But the unwillingness to fight the Han army does not mean that the Baibo army will sit back and watch the situation develop. Taking advantage of Yuan Shu's decline, Han Xian tore up the peace treaty signed with Yuan Shu years ago and led his troops south to the Huaihe River to attack Guangling County.
The prefect of Guangling County was Zuo Rong. He had been serving in Xuzhou since Tao Qian was still alive. After Tao Qian's death, he switched to Yuan Shu. Counting all the time, he had been in business for nine years. Because Zuo Rong believed deeply in Taoism and Buddhism, he built a large number of temples and pagodas in Xuzhou and carved statues of gods. The believers from all counties returned like water, so that there were nearly ten thousand Buddhist households in Guangling, and everyone under his command could recite Amitabha, including his own soldiers. They are also monk soldiers holding swords.
It is said that after believing in Buddhism, these monks have divine power to help them and have no fear of life or death. Some people can walk on steep terrain as if they were walking on flat ground, some can be roasted by fire without breaking a sweat, and after the death of an expert, jade stones are burned into the remains, which are called relics. This rumor was so true that Yuan Shu believed it, so he allowed Zuo Rong to do his own thing in Guangling, which was almost independent. Even if he went to Yingchuan, he would not dare to change it at all.
When Bai Bo's army invaded, Zuo Rong led 30,000 county soldiers to fight. Most of these county soldiers wore monk robes and silk clothes. Before the battle, they chanted Bishamonten to seek the blessing of the God of War. Han Xian was also quite frightened when he saw this, thinking that these people were so serious, could it be that the Buddha really protected them?
But as soon as the two armies engaged in battle, Baibo's army wore armor and Guangling's army had no armor. Perhaps some people were indeed brave and fearless, but they were unable to resist the ruthless blade, and the scene quickly degenerated into a one-sided massacre. Seeing that the war was not going well, Zuo Rong wanted to lead his troops to flee south, but the army lacked horses and could not escape far. He immediately drilled through Han Siam's army and led his troops to catch up. Although Zuo Rong usually boasts that he has obtained the supreme truth of the World Honored One and can recreate three thousand peaceful worlds, at this moment he is helpless and can only surrender.
Guangling then belonged to Bai Bo. The golden statue of the Buddhist temple that Zuo Rong repaired on weekdays and the hundreds of millions of merits were all obtained by Bai Bo. In one month, Han Xian obtained hundreds of millions in Guangling. And those Buddhist households who devoted themselves to Buddhism were also kidnapped by Han Siam to Xiapi and sold as slaves. Guangling, the Buddhist country in Guandong, has now become the same as the light and the dust, and has become a vain thing. Perhaps this is in accordance with the words of the World Honored One: the five aggregates are empty and all suffering is like this.
After Zuo Rong's defeat, Yuan Shu's situation became even more difficult. He originally expected that after Zuo Rong's victory, he would take back Lujiang River for himself, but now it seems that this is just a delusion. But now he is trapped in a county. If Han Xian advances to seize his land again, he will have nowhere to go!
At this time, Yuan Shu remembered Zheng Hun's advice before the war, and felt full of regret. He quickly found Zheng Hun and said to him: "Sir, you are so wise. It's because I didn't listen to your advice that I am in today's humiliation! But although the difficulty is dangerous, it is not inevitable." If I don’t cross it, I hope my husband will teach me!”
But at this time, Zheng Hun also had the idea of looking elsewhere. He no longer wanted to plan for Yuan Shu, so he planned to refuse to meet him. But the servants could not stop Yuan Shu and allowed Yuan Shu to barge in. When the two met, they were speechless for a moment.
Zheng Hun saw Yuan Shu's weathered face, pale hair, and embarrassed expression. He couldn't help but think of Yuan Shu's high-spirited appearance when he first met him. One scene. Guanghe Sanxiu back then actually looks so old now. If I think about him again, I think I have done my best!"
So Zheng Hun said: "If you want to overcome this difficulty, you must learn to tolerate humiliation. Can you tolerate it?"
Yuan Shu didn't understand why and asked: "What are you enduring?"
Zheng Hun said slowly: "If you want to live, please surrender immediately to Linzi. Han Yang is a Westerner coming from the east. Guan Hai will not trust him. If he pretends to surrender, he will definitely agree to it and order Han Yang to withdraw his troops. The only concern is, This is how your family sounds."
Only then did Yuan Shu understand. He was immediately furious and said angrily: "I, Yuan Gongli, a great man from Runan, have the most powerful voice in the world. How can I be so childish!"
"Then are you planning to die to honor your family legacy?"
Yuan Shu was stunned, his face suddenly turned red, and he ignored the ridicule in Zheng Hun's words. He hesitated for a long time, and then said: "The great ancestor was defeated in Pengcheng, and Guangwu was defeated in Huituo. A true man should be able to endure hardships and overcome dangers." You know, today’s humiliation is nothing more than trivial.”
After that, he immediately returned home to prepare. Now that Shi Yiguan has been captured, many of the officials around him have no literary talents, so they have to write it themselves. But when writing the surrender form, Yuan Shu was in a state of confusion. Halfway through writing, he often suddenly smeared his words. He repeated this process and changed more than ten pieces of yellow silk before he finished writing the surrender form.
After sending it out, Yuan Shu was in a trance for a long time, as if he had aged ten years in a day. When I wanted to discuss with Zheng Hun again, I found that Zheng's mansion was empty and there was no one left. After several inquiries, I found out that there had been chaos in the city these days. Zheng Hun took the opportunity to bribe the city guards and led his family away, but they had disappeared.
