When Liu Bang came to Bairen, he wanted to stay there for a night. But suddenly, Liu Bang was moved and asked, "What is the name of this county?" Others said it was called Bairen. Liu Bang thought about it and said: "The people of Bai are forced by others!" So Liu Bang led the army and walked away quickly, as if avoiding ghosts.
After waiting for dawn all night in tension and depression, I realized that Liu Bang had already escaped. The assassination was unsuccessful, but the lack of success does not mean that there was no result. There was a result, and that was the revelation.
In the ninth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty (198 BC), Liu Bang was informed by his enemies about Guan Gao's assassination of Liu Bang. Liu Bang was furious and immediately arrested everyone in Zhang Ao's mansion. Zhao Wu and others felt that they would die sooner or later, so in order to avoid humiliation, they committed suicide immediately. Guan Gao was slightly more knowledgeable and scolded Zhao Wu and other people who committed suicide, saying: "Who ordered you to assassinate Liu Bang? King Zhao did not participate in the murder, but was arrested together; if the assassins were all dead, Who will defend King Zhao?" So Guan Gao, like Zhang Ao, got into the prison car and came to Chang'an.
When I came to Chang'an, I naturally interrogated him. Guan Gao said that the assassination of Liu Bang was done by themselves, Zhang Ao did not know, and had nothing to do with Zhang Ao. Liu Bang didn't believe it and became angry and ordered the jailer to torture him and interrogate him. The jailer tortured him to death, flogging him, and scalding his flesh with red-hot irons. He almost died, but he still insisted on his original words. Liu Bang used severe torture to extract a confession because he wanted to take this opportunity to get rid of Zhang Ao and then be quick.
Lu Fei, who felt sorry for his daughter, knew that Zhang Ao had been arrested and imprisoned, and said to Liu Bang: "Princess Lu Yuan is our daughter, and Zhang Ao is our son-in-law. How could he assassinate you?" Liu Bang was furious and asked: "What if Zhang Ao was taken in?" Emperor, are there still few women in the world?" This sentence can be said to be a blow to the bottom of the pot. Lu Pheasant could only shut up after hearing this.
Tingwei told Liu Bang the interrogation details one by one. Liu Bang said: "What a strong man! Who can go to me in private to find out the truth?" The doctor said: "I know this person. Liu Bang sent Duke Xie to inquire. Duke Xi first told Guan Gao how he had worked so hard, and they talked deeply about it. Finally, he asked Zhang Ao whether he was involved in this matter. Guan Gao said: "Isn't it human nature to love one's own parents, wife, sons and daughters? Now the people of my three clans deserve death according to their crimes. The eight words "loyal to the liver, righteous and courageous, worthy of the sun and the moon" are well deserved. Zhang Ao is really lucky to have such a good general.
