And "summoning generals" means summoning heavenly generals. Taoism believes that the mage holds a token and writes talismans in the air while hitting the side of the token to summon heavenly generals. "Send generals" also means "sending", that is, in thunder. After the general arrives at the altar, the mage reads out the "meaning text" to convey the purpose of the ritual, such as praying for rain, clearing the sky, driving away healing, etc., and then uses the token to raise the sky to issue specific instructions and exert various powers.
It's a bit like Ye Qinghe's technique of summoning gods from the underworld. Therefore, inviting gods from the underworld can also be classified as a kind of summoning of spirits.
What is explained here is only the Taoist method of using the spirit to send generals, but later, all techniques that are good at driving the spirit body to fight for oneself can be generally referred to as the spirit to send generals!

Even human souls can be used. There are also living creatures as shikigami, but most of them are Gu objects, which are used for curses.
It is a very ancient method, and it is also the signature method of Onmyoji!
