Seeing that Shen Hui was indifferent, Zhicheng punched him hard and cursed in a low voice: "Master usually loves you the most, but you are indifferent now!"

Shen Hui grimaced in pain, but still did not cry.

Just when Zhicheng was about to hit him again, he heard Master Sixth Patriarch shout: "Zhicheng, what are you doing! What are you all doing?"

The Sixth Patriarch's majestic gaze scanned the entire hall, and the monks' cries turned into silent sobs.

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng waited for his disciples to cry loudly and the atmosphere became a little calmer. He raised his hands to signal everyone to calm down and asked: "Disciples, why are you crying like this?"

Disciple Huairang sitting in front wiped the tears from his eyes and replied: "Master, I heard that you are about to pass away. From now on, there will be a barrier between yin and yang. We feel very uncomfortable."

Zhicheng and others next to Huairang also answered sadly: "Master's merits are immeasurable. If he passes away suddenly, how can we not be in great pain?"

Zhichang rubbed his eyes that were red and swollen from crying, and said, "I think that soon we will lose Master's sincere teachings, and we will be like a boat without a rudder."

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng turned his face to Shenhui: "Shenhui, everyone in the temple is suffering from my impending death, but why are you so indifferent?"

Shenhui raised his eyebrows and looked extremely solemn: "I believe that the nature of the Dharma does not come and go. After Master passed away, he went to the Western Paradise. In this life, Master is in the boundless sea of Buddha. , carried us on the boat of enlightenment, raised the flag of Zen, and created the great cause of Buddhism. Now the disciples are full, and the cigarettes will be endless in the future. When the master was alive, he created such great achievements, which are well-known. You will leave with a smile on your face soon, But the Buddha's light will always shine on future generations. I feel proud and honored to have such a master, and I feel honored and lucky. How can I cry bitterly?"

"Well, well." After listening to Shenhui's words, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng nodded frequently and praised, "Shenhui, you can really learn the true meaning of the Zen that I advocate. When you enter Buddhism, you must be devoted to kindness and kindness. Being unwholesome means being indifferent to life, death, honor and disgrace, reaching the state of being unmoved by blame and praise, and free from sorrow and joy."

The Divine Council bowed: "Master's teachings today and every day, I will keep them in mind."

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng picked up his head and said to his disciples: "If you had practiced cultivation in the mountains, you would not behave like this. Who are you mourning for when you are crying so bitterly? If you are worried that I will not be able to survive after my death. I can go anywhere, but I know where I'm going, otherwise I wouldn't have announced it to you all. If you really knew where I was going, you wouldn't be crying like this."

When the disciples heard the teachings of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, they all stopped crying, wiped away their tears, and looked at their master with more pious eyes.

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng gave another round of Buddhist teachings to his disciples, and finally emphasized: "It should be noted that the nature of all things and phenomena is that there is no birth and destruction, and there is no change of coming and going. Let me tell you another poem "True and False Movement and Stance"."

All the disciples said in unison: "Master, please enlighten me."

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng coughed a few times, cleared his throat, and recited Ye:

Nothing is true,

Not seeing the truth.

If you see the truth,

It's all seen and not true.

If you can have your own truth,

To be free from falsehood is to be true.

Keep your mind on falsehood,

Where is the truth without truth?

When there is emotion, it is resolved,

To be ruthless is to be motionless.

If you can’t practice cultivation,

The same ruthlessness does not move.

If Mi really doesn't move,

There is movement and immobility.

Not moving means not moving,

There is no buddhahood in ruthlessness.

Able to avoid discrimination,

The first one didn't move.

But seeing it this way,

That is, it is really useful.

Report to all Taoists,

Effort requires intention.

Don’t stay at the Mahayana gate,

If the words match the words.

That is to say, we discuss the meaning of Buddhism together.

There is no tranquility in this place.

If it does not correspond,

Putting your palms together makes you happy.

There is no contradiction in this sect.

To criticize is to violate the moral principles.

Adhere to the righteous and pure Dharma,

Self-nature, life and death.

After the Sixth Patriarch Huineng finished reciting "True and False Movements and Quiets" to his disciples, he said to Zhicheng: "Zhicheng, why did you just attack Shenhui? Although Shenhui is young, he has already learned that there is no good and no evil. The rest of you have not reached this state of the true Buddhist teaching of being unmoved in the face of life, death, glory and destruction, neither sad nor happy. I wonder what you have practiced in the mountains for many years? Who are you sad and crying for now? I ask you, did you cry when the Buddha passed away? When I passed away again a hundred years later, did you cry?"

The monks were stunned, and Fahai said: "Master, when the Buddha passed away more than a thousand years ago, we didn't exist; and a hundred years later, you won't exist either!"

The Sixth Patriarch said: "Isn't this right! Without you in the past, there will be no me in the future. The world is impermanent, and there is life and death. Even if you are as noble as Sakyamuni Buddha, wouldn't he have perished?"

After hearing what the Sixth Patriarch said, the monks stopped sobbing.

The Sixth Patriarch took a breath and said softly: "Now let me tell you again, the Buddha-nature has no birth, no death, no coming, and no going. My physical body has changed, but my Buddha-nature But the body remains the same, essentially without birth or death, without coming or going."

After listening to Buddhist teachings, Zen Master Fahai bowed before him and asked, "After Master passes away, to whom should the ancestral holy robes and golden bowl be passed on?"

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng waved his hand: "I have been preaching Buddhism in Dafan Temple to this day. What I have said has been widely copied and passed down by the world, and is called the "Dharma Treasure Altar Sutra". Fahai, don't you have a detailed Do you want to record it? You will teach the "Altar Sutra" to each other and educate the public. As long as the Buddha Dharma is taught according to the "Altar Sutra", it is the correct Dharma. As for the mantle, according to the instructions of my master, the Fifth Patriarch, and the meaning of Bodhidharma's verses, No more spreading it.”

In order to explain his basis, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng recited the verses of Patriarch Bodhidharma:

I was originally a native,

Preach the Dharma to save the lost love.

One flower spreads to five leaves,

The result comes naturally.

One flower and five leaves represent that Zen Buddhism has been passed down in China for five generations. By the time of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, Zen Buddhism flourished and blossomed everywhere.

When everyone heard this, they all lowered their heads silently. In the huge Buddhist temple, there is a layer of silence as fragile as cicada wings...

"Wow..." Suddenly, a heartbreaking sound suddenly sounded.

It was him, a young novice, a young novice named Xiqian. He was the last novice monk to serve the Sixth Patriarch after Yingxing and Shenhui.

He sat down on the ground and howled.

Fahai came over to coax him: "Xiqian, don't cry. Didn't you hear what the Sixth Patriarch said? If you cry again, Master will be unhappy."

Xiao Xiqian ignored it and kept crying sadly.

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng came down from the throne, picked him up, and wiped his tears while saying: "Xiao Xiqian, Xiao Xiqian, you see everyone is not sad anymore, why are you crying?"

Xiao Xiqian laid his head on the shoulder of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng and sobbed: "Master, you can't die! What will I do if you die? Who should I follow to learn Buddhism in the future?"

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng put Xiqian down, held his little face in his hands and said, "Xiqian, Xiqian, isn't your name 'Xiqian'?"

Although Xi Qian heard the meaning in Master's words, he was too young and didn't know the meaning yet. He said in confusion: "Master, you gave me this name yourself when you ordained me a few years ago. It’s up!”

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng nodded.

Xiao Xiqian reluctantly pulled the lapel of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng's clothes and said, "Master, after you pass away, who should I rely on and practice Zen with?"

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng smiled slightly and replied in three simple words: "Go and think about it!"
