There was a burst of discussion in the hall.
Suddenly, in the corner, a very confident man spoke with a very loud voice: "I think it is neither the wind nor the flags that are moving, but the hearts of the two mages are moving!"
This man's words were like the ripples caused by a huge stone falling into a deep pool, which immediately rippled through everyone's hearts.
Master Yin Zong, who had been listening to the debate with his eyes closed, suddenly opened his eyes wide. His keen eyes caught a middle-aged man with extraordinary behavior, heroic spirit and many vicissitudes of life in his eyes.
This middle-aged man is none other than Huineng!
At the same time, everyone's eyes suddenly focused on him.
Huineng stood up calmly and said: "If a person can't see, hear, speak, or think, does he know the existence of wind flags or mountains, rivers and earth? Whether it's wind or flags, they move. Neither the movement nor the immobility have anything to do with him. Without inner activities, the existence of all things becomes irrelevant to people. Therefore, I say it is not the movement of the wind or the movement of the flags, but the movement of the two masters. My heart is moving.”
Master Yinzong also met the eminent monk of the Fifth Patriarch Hongren in person, and he understood clearly. Just by listening to these words, he knew that the male layman speaking in front of him was extraordinary.
The so-called movement of wind and flags are essentially the relationship between the mind and the environment. The wind is the environment, and the flags are the guest dust.
Therefore, Sakyamuni Buddha said: "There are causes and conditions for the birth of the world, and there are causes and conditions for the destruction of the world." The Buddhist Dharma is the method of dependent origination, and its most brilliant point is that it reveals the true meaning of the universe and life - the emptiness of dependent origination.
The Buddha also said: This exists, so that other exists; this arises, so that arises; this does not exist, so that does not exist; this ceases, therefore that ceases. Everything in the universe is caused by causes and conditions, and they are dependent on each other, are mutually dependent, are mutual conditions, and are mutual preconditions, that is, mutual causation.
For example, if there is only wind or flags, there will be no dancing flags; or although there are flags, they are not hung high on the flagpole, and no matter how strong the wind is, they cannot be blown. ; Or the flags are raised, but the wind does not blow here, but blows to other places, so that there is no scene of the flags fluttering.
Therefore, it is not the wind that moves, nor the flags that move. Why is the heart moving?
The three realms are based on mind, and all dharmas are based on consciousness. When the mind arises, all kinds of dharmas arise; when the mind dies, all kinds of dharmas disappear. Movement, good and evil, beauty and ugliness, good and bad...all the contradictions and oppositions in the world are caused by the forced differentiation of each of us based on our own likes and dislikes, interests and so on.
Therefore, the emergence of all disputes and the emergence of all contradictions are the result of us choosing one thing over another with different values.
Who is right and who is wrong?
There are no things much ado about.
Huineng has already realized in real life: Situations are created by the heart, laws are born from the heart, and everything is the function of our human heart. So, today he said: It’s not the wind that moves, it’s not the flags that move, it’s the heart that moves.
At some point, Yingxing came to Huineng's side. He said blankly, "I know you. I've known you a long time ago."
Huineng smiled kindly and asked, "When have you seen me?"
Everyone hopes that Yingxing can tell the origin of this person who looks inconspicuous but has extraordinary words.
But Yingxing said, "I've seen you in my dream."
"Shhh", everyone sighed in disappointment.
At this time, the old monk suddenly said: "How do you know it's our hearts that are moving? You are not me, how do you know if my heart is not moving?"
Then, the old monk said intriguingly: "Zhuangzi and Huizi once played on the bridge of Haoshui River. Zhuangzi envied the happiness of fish. Huizi asked him, ʻYou are not a fish, how do you know the happiness of fish?' Zhuangzi replied, ʻYou are not Me, how do you know that I don't know the happiness of fish?" The old monk cleverly used Zhuangzi's eternal wisdom here.
Everyone felt that there was excitement and looked at Huineng waiting for his answer.
Hui Neng replied calmly: "Because, you and this little master have enlightened minds and Buddha nature, and all living beings have Buddha nature..."
Yingxing interrupted Huineng: "Wrong! Human beings have human nature, and only Buddhas have Buddha nature."
Huineng asked him: "Don't you believe you have Buddha nature?"
Yingxing shook his head: "Of course I don't believe it. If I had Buddha nature, I would have become a Buddha long ago! Are you still grinding my teeth with you here?"
Huineng suddenly raised his palm, trying to hit Yingxing.
Xiao Yingxing ran away in a hurry and tripped over the futon. He looked even more embarrassed than if he had been beaten.
Everyone laughed, and the old monk was even more happy.
Yingxing sat on the ground with a sad face, pointed at Huineng and said, "You look good on the outside, but you are really bad on the inside! I, I, I thought you were..."
"Who am I?" Huineng asked with a smile.
"Forget it, neither are you anyway." People were confused by Ying Xing's confused and confused words.
Huineng picked up Yingying and asked with a smile: "Why did you avoid me just now?"
Yingxing spread his hands, looked at Huineng, and said, "If you want to hit me, can I avoid it?"
Huineng continued, "But did I hit you? How did you know I was going to hit you?"
"I, I..." Yingxing faltered.
Huineng then said seriously: "Because you are afraid of pain and can predict that I am going to hit you, so you avoid it subconsciously. This proves that you have your own nature. This kind of heart that avoids suffering and seeks happiness, seeks relief, and longs for peace and happiness is not correct. Is it our inherent enlightened mind, our Buddha nature?”
Master Yin Zong, who had been quietly sizing up Huineng, couldn't help but open his eyes a little wider. He looked at Huineng for a while, and then closed them tightly again for some unknown reason.
Ying Xing danced for joy: "Wow, I have Buddha nature! I'm going to become a Buddha! I, I... why haven't I become a Buddha?"
Huineng further enlightened: "Because your heart is moved! The flags are moving but the heart is not moving. If you purify your mind and empty your body, you will naturally be able to enter the great road."
Yingxing circled around Huineng and murmured: "I know who you are, I know! You are..."
Everyone listened carefully to what Ying Xing said.
Unexpectedly, when he stood in front of Huineng, he asked him: "Are you right?"
Everyone thought Yingxing's words were nonsense and extremely unreasonable, but Huineng smiled and answered, even more inexplicably: "If you think I am, I naturally am."
So, the two people laughed inexplicably, looking very happy.
The old monk was unhappy: "This donor, all living beings inherently have Buddha nature. It has been said in the Nirvana Sutra long ago. This is common sense in Buddhism. What is there to be proud of!"
Huineng bowed his hands to the people present and said loudly: "Well, distinguished monks and virtuous men, today is a rare opportunity for karma, so I will simply say a few words. From the perspective of Buddhism, everything in the universe has a cause. It is caused by fate. The same is true for the fluttering of flags and flags. If there is no wind, the flags will not move; if there are no flags, no matter how strong the wind is, there will be no phenomenon of flags and flags fluttering. So, I say, it is not the wind, nor the flags. .”
At this time, the noise of the crowd suddenly stopped.
I saw Master Yin Zong coming down from the high throne and walking towards Huineng.
He bowed deeply to Hui Neng and said with a smile on his face: "The monk's conversation is extraordinary, and every sentence is true to the Zen philosophy. He must not be an ordinary person! It is said that the mantle of the fifth ancestor of Huangmei has been passed down to the south for more than ten years. Could it be that the monk is the Sixth Patriarch? Master Zu?"
Hui Neng also smiled and returned the courtesy: "I don't dare. Hui Neng has met Master Yin Zong."
Master Yin Zong shouted loudly: "The traveler is indeed the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, and it is indeed the Sixth Patriarch Huineng who has come out of the mountain! We are ignorant, please accept the worship of the poor monk!"
Master Yinzong knelt on the ground and bowed to Huineng.
Huineng rushed forward, pulled him up, and said, "Buddhist rules state that only lay people should pay homage to monks. How can there be any reason to pay homage to me, a lay person!"
"Why should the Sixth Patriarch be too humble? In the world of etiquette, the first to hear the Tao is the teacher; in the Buddhist rules, the first to be saved is respected. You are the Patriarch of the generation, and we should pay homage and receive your teachings!"
Yingxing didn't care about anything, he squeezed over and said nonchalantly: "Are you really you?" Huineng smiled: "Of course I am me."
"Are you the Nanmanzi who stole someone else's cassock and golden bowl and ran away without a trace?" Yingxing joked happily to Huineng.
Master Yin Zong shouted: "Ying Xing, don't be rude!"
Huineng said magnanimously: "It doesn't matter. In a sense, I did steal someone else's cassock and golden bowl. You think, if I don't come to Dongchan Temple, the mantle of my master, the Fifth Patriarch, will naturally be passed on to me." Someone else."
Master Yin Zong smiled happily and said: "Master Sixth Patriarch, please take a seat and show us your robe and bowl so that we can burn incense and pray to increase our blessings and wisdom."
Hui Neng was promoted to the throne. He opened his bag, took out his cassock, and put it on himself. An inconspicuous cassock and an inconspicuous person. However, when the two are combined, Huineng is no longer the shabby Huineng just now, but becomes the radiant Sixth Patriarch; The body immediately emits brilliant and dazzling light.
The monks and laypeople knelt down one after another to admire the Sixth Patriarch.
Huineng lowered his eyes and closed his eyes. He sat motionless on the throne amidst the commotion, unfazed by honor and disgrace, forgetting both things and myself.
