During the funeral process, Xinzhou County Magistrate Zhang Zhongchang learned that Yan Fakui, who had been executed in the autumn of that year, was still at large. He immediately issued a notice to arrest him and verify that he was executed.
Since then, the danger of Hui Neng being hunted has been lifted.
Huineng followed Li's last words and buried Li next to Lu Xingxin's tomb on the top of Longshan Mountain.
On the day of Li's funeral, Hui Neng knelt in front of the lattice wearing sackcloth and mourning. Li Xiaolan and Liang Jinlian also knelt with Hui Neng like filial sons and daughters, wailing in mourning...
In Xialu Village, the sounds of suona and eight-tone music mixed with the sounds of mourning were heard.
In the sky above Xialu Village, a gust of autumn wind suddenly passed by, and a gust of dark clouds floated, followed by a soft autumn rain. It seemed that the Sixth Patriarch Huineng was also crying in sorrow for the loss of his loving mother...
At this time, in the wilderness of Xialu Village, the vast land was shrouded in rain and fog, making it confusing and adding a bit of sadness.
Bursts of funeral suona music sounded, and the mourning cries echoed over Xialu Village. A procession of people wearing linen and mourning, holding paper flags, and crying in mourning followed four strong men carrying the coffin. Huineng was wearing linen and wearing mourning, holding the coffin, and Wen Tsai and cowboys supported him as he walked from the village. When they came out, they scattered the paper in the sky as they walked.
The ghost paper fluttered in the wind and rain, and fell leisurely on the field, stained with mud.
The funeral procession took Li to the top of Longshan Mountain for burial, and then slowly went down the mountain...
After Hui Neng finished his mother's funeral, he spent the first seven days building a thatched hut next to the cemetery to observe mourning for Li's mother.
Putting filial piety first among all good deeds is a tradition left by our ancestors.
In ancient times, loyalty and filial piety were regarded as the standard to measure a person, and this standard has been used by all dynasties.
Keeping filial piety for relatives lasts for three years. This is a rule left by our ancestors.
Confucius, a representative figure of Confucianism, said: A child is born for three years, and then he is free from the care of his parents. My husband has been mourned for three years, and the whole world is mourning! This is the reason for observing filial piety for three years. It took you three years to leave the arms of your parents. After your parents leave, you are asked to observe filial piety for three years. This is our ancient Chinese etiquette.
Ancient people paid great attention to loyalty and filial piety, among which filial piety was particularly important. In ancient times, after the death of their parents, their children had to observe mourning and refrain from serving as officials, marrying, attending banquets, or taking exams for three years. This is called Dingyou. In addition, during the period of mourning, you are not allowed to wear red or green. During the period of mourning, you are not allowed to participate in entertainment, visit relatives and friends, etc.
The three-year mourning originated from the Shang Dynasty, and the Zhou Dynasty accepted this system after it destroyed the Shang Dynasty. However, during the Spring and Autumn Period, a large number of princes did not take it seriously, and no one came out to criticize it, indicating that it had not become a common practice at that time.
…
Huineng kept filial piety to his mother in this small thatched house, and more than three years passed quietly...
After Hui Neng returned south with the mantle of Zen Buddhism, he hid in the mountains of Sihui, Huaiji, and Xinzhou in Guangdong for more than ten years. He stayed in this thatched house in his hometown of Longshan for another three and a half years, spending a total of his time in Lingnan. Fifteen extraordinary years have passed.
These fifteen years were fifteen years of bitterness and joy for Huineng, fifteen years of practice, fifteen years of losing his loving mother and marriage, and fifteen years of hard practice of the Buddha's teachings.
In the past fifteen years, Huineng has grown from a handsome young man to a mature and stable middle-aged man.
One night near the Spring Festival, Huineng went out after meditating in this small hut as usual. He saw an old monk in the distance, holding a crystal bowl in his hand, using an internal force to cultivate. The deep and superior internal energy that transmits sound into secrets sent the chanting sound into his ears from a distance, allowing him to hear clearly:
The prime years will never come again,
It's hard to get morning again in one day.
Dharma King should encourage you,
Time waits for no one.
…
"King of Dharma?" Huineng thought about the old monk's recitation...Suddenly, he remembered what his father had told him when he was a child: in the early morning when he was born, there were two monks standing at the door, one was over eighty years old, A man who was over fifty years old had kind facial features and extraordinary demeanor. He said that he came here specially to name him "Huineng". Before leaving, he saluted him and called him "Dharma King".
…
Huineng smiled knowingly, returned to the thatched hut, picked up the baggage containing the ancestor's cassock, and went out. He looked back affectionately at the thatched hut where he had lived for more than three years. He even forgot to say goodbye to Li Xiaolan, Liang Jinlian and other relatives and friends, and then followed The old monk went straight down the mountain...
The sound of New Year's firecrackers in the distant villages caused the wild plum blossoms to bloom, expressing the joy of spring in the vast wilderness. Huineng said to himself: "The Spring Festival is here, spring is coming, and it's time for me to go down the mountain."
…
In the first year of Yifeng of Tang Dynasty (AD 676), on the eighth day of the first lunar month, Huineng came to Guangzhou City (then part of Nanhai County).
Guangzhou was the first stop where Bodhidharma, adhering to the legacy of Prajna Dora, sailed eastward during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty and landed on a raft in the Eastern Lands of the Tang Dynasty. The allusion of "crossing the river with a reed" originated from this.
At this time, the streets of Guangzhou were criss-crossed, bustling with traffic, and full of tourists, creating a bustling scene.
Huineng asked passers-by: "Which monastery is the largest in this city? Which place has the most eminent monks?"
"Faxing Temple."
"Faxing Temple."
"Faxing Temple!"
Although the clothes of the people walking on the street indicated that they belonged to different classes, their answers were all the same.
Huineng deduced the position of Faxing Temple in Guangzhou and inquired about the route.
Next to a street paved with large green bricks, there is a large-scale temple——
Fa Xing Temple.
The Faxing Temple at that time is now Guangxiao Temple in Guangzhou, which is a famous temple in Lingnan.
one.
Faxing Temple was not originally a temple, but the palace and pavilion of Zhao De, King of Nanyue in the Western Han Dynasty.
The cascades and dense vegetation lock in the infinite spring scenery.
At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, the Three Kingdoms were competing for supremacy. Yu Fan, a famous counselor under Sun Zhongmou, an important minister of the Eastern Wu Dynasty, was demoted to Lingnan for offending the emperor. He saw that the place was spacious and covered with trees, so he used it as a place for lectures.
Yu Fan was extremely talented and had unique insights into analyzing problems. He had many disciples and gained a great reputation. People in the world call this place "Yu Garden". Because Yu Fan planted a lot of rare trees at that time - Kezi trees, which are dense and unique, people also call this place "Ke Lin".
After Yu Fan died of illness, his descendants believed in Buddhism and converted the garden into a temple, named "Zhizhi". Dozens of monks were invited to live in the temple, where they chanted Buddha's scriptures all year round to save the souls of the dead.
Later, when the Yu family fell, the monks stayed here and it evolved into a Buddhist holy place. In the first year of Long'an in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 397), Mayashe, an eminent monk from Kashmir, built the "Wangyuan Temple" here, spreading Buddhist scriptures widely and spreading his reputation.
Later, all eminent monks from foreign countries liked to come here to rest, and it became one of the important famous temples in Lingnan.
In the first year of Emperor Wu of Liang Dynasty, Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, came to Guangzhou from Tianzhu and stayed in this temple. Master Zhenyi from West India also lived in this temple and translated more than 40 scriptures.
Today, Huineng's arrival is destined to open a new page in the history of Buddhism.
Huineng came to the tall gate of Faxing Temple, looked around, and couldn't help but exclaimed: "Oh, it is really impressive!"
Huineng hesitated for a moment, then raised his right foot and stepped forward onto the high threshold.
Huineng's step became a crucial step towards reaching the majestic throne of the Buddha's palace!
The subsequent dialogue filled with Zen ideas in the temple not only became a turning point in Huineng's life, but also an important pivot for the rapid spread of Buddhist Zen ideas.
After Huineng walked into Faxing Temple, he looked around. Inside, there were trees and trees, thick shade on the ground, winding corridors, and an elegant environment. The Tianwang Hall, Jialan Hall, Thousand Buddhas Hall, Sleeping Buddha Pavilion, Wind Flag Hall, Bell Tower and Drum Tower all have brackets and cornices, red walls and green tiles, overflowing with solemnity in their grandeur.
Huineng marveled in his heart: "This Buddhist holy land can be regarded as the first in the Brahma world!"
The main hall built on a high platform is even more majestic. Inside and outside the main hall, there were crowds of people and the darkness filled the whole hall. There were hundreds of believers standing even outside the main hall. A rough estimate was that there were more than 3,000 people in the audience.
Guangzhou is the most prosperous metropolis in Lingnan, where celebrities and business travelers gather. When Patriarch Bodhidharma came to China by boat, it was from here that he set foot on the land of China and sowed the seeds of Zen;
Now, his grandson of the Fifth Tradition, Huineng, will spread his dharma mat from here and spread the Zen method widely, thus making Zen, a treasure of human civilization, even more brilliant.
Is this a random coincidence or a historical necessity?
At this time, Huineng looked up to the sky and saw flags hanging high on the flagpole of Faxing Temple, fluttering in the wind. He felt excited in his heart - he knew that the flags rising in the temple and the five colored ribbons fluttering meant that there were important religious activities that day;
Raising a single flag today means that there are eminent monks giving lectures in the temple.
Huineng slowly walked into Faxing Temple along with the endless flow of people. But I saw several branches of red plum blossoms shining like stars, with a faint fragrance floating around, conveying to people the message that the harsh winter is over.
On the ordination platform in the temple, a teenage novice monk knelt down and paid homage to a bodhi tree, his expression solemn and solemn.
A young Zen monk named Fa Kong, who was seventeen or eighteen years old, ran over and scolded him: "Yingxing, are you crazy again? Why are you nervously worshiping a tree when you don't worship the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the main hall?"
Ying Xing turned a deaf ear, Gu Zisan knelt down and bowed, seeming to be mumbling something in prayer.
Fakong kept talking: "No wonder Master Yinzong gave you the Dharma name 'Ying Xing'. It seems that you will never grow up. You are still like a three-year-old baby, holding earth clods as steamed buns."
Ying had finished his prostrations and glanced sideways at Fakong: "What do you know!"
Fakong said: "I am your senior brother. I started teaching earlier than you, am older than you, and have listened to more scriptures than you. Naturally, I know more than you."
Yingxing curled his lips and said: "The wooden fish in the main hall started earlier than you, is older than you, and has listened to more scriptures than you. Does he know more than you? When we recite the lesson later, let's not knock it, knock you His head is healed."
Fakong was speechless and hesitated for a long time before he said: "Then why are you worshiping a tree when you leave the statue of Buddha and Bodhisattva alone?"
"Master has said that the golden Bodhisattva cannot save the furnace, the wooden Bodhisattva cannot save the fire, and the clay Bodhisattva cannot save the water. I, Ying Xing, am a great living person, and I want to worship the living Bodhisattva." Ying Xing said confidently with his hands on his hips.
Fakong looked mocking: "Is this tree a living Bodhisattva?"
Yingxing didn't answer but asked: "Let me ask you, what kind of tree is this?"
Fakong said: "Bodhi tree."
Yingxing asked again: "Since you know it is a sacred tree, why don't you let me worship?"
Fakong laughed and said: "Buddha Sakyamuni attained enlightenment and became a Buddha under the Bodhi tree. But he was under the Bodhi tree on the banks of the Nelianchan River in India, not under this tree. You What’s the use of worshiping it?”
