After Fada left Tianlu Mountain, he came to Lushan, Jiangxi. He observed with his discerning eyes and found that the purple energy here came from the east, and the relationship with Buddha was extremely strong. In a few decades, a great Bodhisattva would come from the east and build a supreme Dharma pillar here. Zen Buddhism will be like a river flowing out of the Three Gorges and flowing thousands of miles; a river flowing out of Tongguan will surge forward. Zen Buddhism in the world is like the wind destroying the grass, and it dominates the world; jungles everywhere are springing up, and they are founded one after another.
Sure enough, during the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty, Mazu Daoyi came from Jianyang, Jianzhou in the east, to Gong Gongshan here to promote Zen. The hundreds of famous Zen masters he trained here spread all over the country. For a time, lions roared in the fields, tigers roared on the peaks, dragons roamed in the sky, and elephants danced in the jungle... It can be said that there were many talented people, each leading the way, and caused a stir in the Central Plains. The majestic and magnificent Zen sea craze - this is a story for another time.
Fada was drinking tea at a roadside tea stall. Fawu hurried over and gasped: "Brother, I have caught up with you!"
Fada was shocked: "Didn't you go to practice with Master Zhang in Tianlu Mountain? Why did you end up here?"
Fawu sat down on the stool, rubbed his feet vigorously, and said, "Didn't Master Zhang tell you that reading thousands of books means traveling thousands of miles. I will travel thousands of miles with you first, and then I will follow Senior Brother Xingsi." Read thousands of scriptures.”
Fada was helpless: "You, you..."
Walking in ancient times is a compulsory task for everyone. Not to mention the magical battles and wind-watching experiences in the four-sided jungle where dragons and crouching tigers are hidden, the nature alone, which contains endless Zen opportunities, can make every enlightened Zen practitioner sigh with emotion:
The sound of the wind, the rain, the pines and the waves are all at ease; the colors of the mountains, water, and haze are all empty. The mountains are still and the water is long, and sometimes I feel Zen; the sky is high and the clouds are flying, where do I ask the wise sun...
With a bald head and a cassock, the world is as far away as the sea. In the wind and frost copper bowl, there are often magical lotus flowers.
From then on, Fa Wu realized a pair of straw sandals, a bamboo hat, a clay bowl, and a Zen staff, and started his wandering career with his senior brother Fa Da. Although the straw sandals are small, they can carry thousands of miles of road under the feet; the bamboo hat is not big, but they can hold thousands of miles of blue sky on the head; the tile bowl, although shallow, can hold the water of rivers, lakes and seas; the Zen staff is in hand, surveying the jungles of the world.
Their feet are stained with mud from northern Guangdong, their leggings are stained with soil from southern Jiangxi, and the moon in the middle of Fujian is above their heads. Now they come to smell the wind from east Zhejiang.
Traveling again and again, they traveled through autumn, winter, spring and summer, and arrived in Yongjia, Zhejiang. On this day, Fada and Fawu were walking on the rugged mountain road of Xianyan Mountain in Ruian County. The sun at noon was like a fire, making the mountain road smoke.
Fa Wu walked very hard, but when he looked at Fa Da, he never suggested taking a rest - "You deserve it, you are a beggar and you have to come with me!" If he complained a little, Fa Da would definitely say this.
Fada was secretly happy. He pointed to the pavilion halfway up the mountain in front and said, "Let's take a rest at that pavilion."
In the pavilion, there was already a man lying on a bench to rest, with a bamboo hat covering his face. Fada and Fawu sat down on the ground. Fawu took off his straw sandals, looked at his red and swollen feet, and breathed out.
Fada asked him deliberately: "What are we doing?"
Fa Wu didn't even think about it: "Let's go on foot."
Fada asked again: "Do you know what walking is?"
"I don't know." Fawu answered simply.
"I don't know what's best." Fada said enigmatically. To know is to know, and to know is not to know - said Confucius. Those who know must know something, and those who do not know everything - Master Seng Zhao said in "The Treatise on Prajna Ignorance". The sage's wisdom is ignorant, but all qualities are illuminated; the body of the Dharma has no image, but its different shapes correspond to each other - this is what the "Preface to the Vimalakīrti Sutra" says.
Suddenly I had an enlightenment! He shouted regretfully: "Oh, I've been fooled by Master Zhang again!"
"Who did you fall for?"
"Our Master Zhang is that bad young man!"
Fada smiled and said: "Master Zhang didn't ask you to come with me, you followed me willingly and secretly!"
Fawu said with a sad face: "It's precisely because he knows that the more you don't let me come, the more I will find ways to follow you, so... it's bitter - wow - I have nothing to complain about, this is really bitter!"
"You deserve it. This is called being clever but being misled by your cleverness! However, this is the master's gift to you. Now that you are here, don't spend your time in vain. If you travel across the country and county, you can enjoy the beautiful mountains and rivers as you like; spend the winter here and spend the winter there. In summer, walking like migratory birds, it’s like trying to get a bucket of rice from others and losing half the family’s food for half a year! There is no benefit.”
Fa Da's great truth made Fa Wu very impatient. He said angrily: "Yes, yes, yes! Can you stop nagging? I remember it all! The master said, 'The three realms are only the mind, and all laws are the same. Only consciousness'."
Fada suddenly shook his sharp wits: "Really? Since 'the three realms are based on the mind, and all laws are based on consciousness', then, is the big stone outside the pavilion inside your heart or outside your heart?"
Fawu said without thinking: "The three realms are based on the mind, of course it is in the heart!"
Fada laughed: "How can you put such a big stone in your heart? Don't you feel heavy when walking?"
Fa Wu clearly felt the power of Zen from Fa Da's words, but because he didn't study hard enough and didn't practice well enough, he couldn't really grasp it, let alone respond accordingly, so he was speechless.
This situation is like a hen hatching an egg. At a certain point, the old hen is afraid that her baby will suffocate in the hard eggshell, so she will often tentatively peck the eggshell with her beak. If the chick inside happens to be hatched and mature, it will make a sucking sound, which is called spitting. At this time, the hen pecked from the outside and the chick spat from the inside - the eggshell burst into pieces, and a new life was born. Zen Buddhism calls this synergy between Zen masters and students "spitting and pecking at the same time." The mechanism of spitting can only be understood suddenly if the inside and outside are corresponding and there is no gap. If it is a "stupid" or "stinky egg" and there is no reaction inside, no matter how compassionate the old hen is, it cannot peck it out.
The current Dharma enlightenment is just like an "idiot" that has not hatched and matured.
Seeing his embarrassment, Fada persuaded him earnestly: "Little brother, when we study Buddhism and practice Zen, we cannot memorize the classics, let alone take the Zen quotes of the ancestors as our own words. The Zen sayings of the ancestors Words, that’s other people’s experience, not ours. Zen is like drinking water, knowing whether it’s hot or cold. Everything has to be realized by yourself!”
The man who was lying down and sleeping suddenly took off the bamboo hat from his face and sat up. It turns out that he is also a bald monk. He asked confusedly: "Who is your master?"
Fa Wuzheng was not angry and said: "Our master is of course our master! Are you coming to join in the Zen fight?"
"I'm asking, which eminent monk is your master?"
Fawu asked back: "Who are you?"
The Zen monk slapped his forehead and said, "Oh, I was the one who was abrupt." "
He stood up, put his hands together and saluted: "The poor monk Xuan Wu, I just listened to this master's words, and every sentence is in line with the Buddhist philosophy. I would like to ask for advice."
