The Tenth Palace of Hell is the actual controller of the underworld, but above the Tenth Palace of Hell there are ghost emperors of the five directions. They have very senior qualifications in the underworld and manage the five directions in the east, west, south, and north respectively.
It should be noted here that the Five Directions Ghost Emperors are not five people, but nine people.
Except for the Southern Ghost Emperor who is in charge alone, the other four directions are managed by two Ghost Emperors together.
For example, the Eastern Ghost Emperor is the famous Shen Tu and Yu Lei, who are said to be in charge of the gates of ghosts, and they are also the earliest door gods.
Above the five ghost emperors there is the Fengdu Emperor.
This Emperor Fengdu is said to be the incarnation of Emperor Ziwei in the underworld, one of the four emperors. He is also called Emperor Fengdu Beiyin. He is regarded as the sect of ghosts in the underworld and is equivalent to the supreme leader, the highest god in the underworld.

Of these two great gods, one is Empress Houtu and the other is Emperor Dongyue.

Emperors of ancient times often went to Mount Tai to worship, so the status of the God of Mount Tai continued to rise. It can be seen from the names of the gods. The first was Lord Taishan and God of Mount Tai, and later became the King of Tianqi and the Rensheng Emperor of Tianqi. They were all as equal as the sky. .
Therefore, Emperor Dongyue had the priesthood in charge of all life and death in the world, and his status should be higher than that of Emperor Fengdu.
In addition, there is another great god who must be mentioned.
This is Taiyi Jiu Ku Tianzun, also known as Qingxuan Emperor, Dongji Qinghua Emperor, Xun Sheng Jiu Tianzun, he is one of the six emperors of Taoism.
The place where this Great Heavenly Lord is located is the Oriental Qinghua Changle World, which can lead the souls of the suffering souls to rebirth. For those who have accumulated good deeds and completed their merits, Taiyi the Suffering Heavenly Lord is also responsible for guiding them to heaven and become immortals.
Legend has it that Taiyi saved Ku Tianzun in order to control the ghosts in the Nine Nether Hells. He vowed to save people and ghosts, and incarnated in the ten directions to save Ku Tianzun, and also transformed into the Hades of the Ten Palaces of the Underworld.
Taoism's famous Chaodu Dharma Assembly, where food is given in an iron pot, is also called Qingxuan Jilian, and the more advanced Huangluzhai, all of which are dedicated to Taiyi, the Lord of Suffering.
